This was a redesign of a local furniture retail business, whose last redesign took place in 2005. All of the sections of the website were updated with new information, brands, and products. In addition, I created an additional page about design services. Specific information is available below each before-and-after image. The site is available online at
Routzahns.com.
The background design was modified to a more modern design. The home page's logo was updated, the menu was updated and stylized, and new slideshow of floor merchandise was created. The introduction was moved, but kept the same.
Many of the brands were updated or deleted, to keep pace with changing market conditions. The images and text were stylized to construe a modern design.
The delivery page has two separate documents linked which were previously images. These two documents were digitized and updated with new procedures.
The style guide was also updatedto give a more modern design.
The "about" section was changed to reflect new market conditions, as well as stylized for a more modern feel.
The contact page was heavily modified, placing the most important information at the top. A new interactive map via Bing is embedded, providing easier access for customers.
Photography
Besides doing design for the website, I also took several photographs of floor merchandise, which are featured in the slideshow on the home page.
Typography
Century Gothic, a 1930s inspired art-deco design was chosen as the main heading style. Cambria, with a backup font of Georgia, was chosen as the main body text to improve reading ability.
Design Standards
The website's previous design was completed in Frontpage, hence there were numerous errors and browser quirks which resulted. The new design utilized experimental, but valid HTML 5 and CSS 3 code. As with all designs, I made the html page lightweight, utilizing CSS to stylize elements and lessen loading time. The site can be viewed at screen resolutions as small as 800 by 600, but looks best in higher resolutions. The home page uses a JQuery slideshow. The menu utilizes no javascript, instead relying on CSS 2 selectors and HTML list properties. The rounded corners are achieved in some browsers via CSS 3. The site is completely viewable in all versions of Internet Explorer back to 6.0, as well as Firefox, Google Chrome, Opera, and KHTML-based browsers.
